The Story

Based on a Ford Thames 400E chassis, the Airborne was a classic 1960s caravanette in the VW mode. Corgi introduced this much-loved model into their range in 1962, producing it in various two-tone colour schemes – most notably in green, blue or lilac.

With classic Corgi spun hubs and Glidamatic suspension, the model features rear doors that open to reveal a two colour interior complete with a small table, a cooker, venetian blinds and even a foam cushion on one for the miniature seats. Injection moulded, the interior was yet another first for Corgi, a significant upgrade in quality compared to typical vacuum-formed plastics of the time. Manufacture of the Ford Thames Airborne ended in 1966 after an impressive 900,000 had been produced.
