Land-Rover Breakdown Truck (417)

Beautifully modelled, this brightly painted breakdown truck was manufactured by Corgi between 1960 and 1963. The bodywork is based on an earlier ‘Series 2’ Corgi Land Rover, number 406. Despite having a swivelling roof-mounted spotlight, its best feature is undoubtedly a fully-working winch, ingeniously operated by turning a spare wheel on the Land Rover’s nearside body. Corgi revived the model in 1968, giving it a new 477 catalogue number.

The new version was similar in appearance but featured a plastic half-hood and a different Corgi livery. Later models dispensed with the spare wheel for operating the winch. Needless to say, it is the original 417 model that collectors desire the most!
